Therapists

Carey Van Fleet Jones

M.S., CCC-SLP

Education: Masters of Science, Certificate of Clinical Competence (ASHA), licensed by the State of Florida and Orton-Gillingham trained.

I have lived in beautiful Ocala for over 25 years and love the small town feel.

I graduated from the University of South Florida with a Bachelors of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders.

I began working at that time in the Pasco County School System working with ages birth to 3 and elementary age children with speech, language and hearing disorders.

During this time I attended Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ during my summers (a beautiful and amazing part of the country to visit) and graduated with honors with a Masters of Science in Communication Sciences and disorders.

My husband, Rodney Jones, and I then moved back to Ocala where I began working at MRMC Speech and Hearing Center. During my time there I became more interested in literacy and reading development . The Orton-Gillingham approach to reading became a big interest of mine as I saw how it could drastically change a way a child reads, spells and writes. I then decided to become trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach so I could help children become successful readers.

While working at MRMC I met many wonderful therapists whom I am still friends with today. Two of them, Andrea and Jenny became more than just friends they became my partners in opening Gifts Speech Language and Reading Specialist and what a blessing it has been to our lives.

I love what I do and I am thankful each day that God has blessed me with the opportunity to make a difference in a child’s life.

Andrea Lombardo Owen

M.S., CCC-SLP

I was raised in Ocala, FL and after volunteering with speech-language pathologists, it was clear that this was the career I should pursue.  I then decided to move to Tallahassee, FL to major in Communicative Disorders.  It was there that I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Florida State University.

After receiving my Bachelor’s degree, I moved to Tampa, FL where I received a Master’s in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of South Florida.

I am licensed by the State of Florida as a Speech-Language Pathologist and have a Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. In addition, I am also trained in the Orton-Gillingham method, which implements multi-sensory phonemic-based reading instruction to struggling readers, and trained in Reading with TLC Lively Letters & Sight Words You Can See Program.

In my seven years of experience, I have specialized in working with children of all ages in both private and academic settings.  My experience includes working with disorders such as articulation, phonology, language, and reading, writing, and spelling and other developmental disabilities.

I began my career as a speech-language pathologist in Ocala working at MRMC Speech and Hearing Center in the Outpatient department, then in the MRMC Communi-Kids program.  It was during my time at MRMC that I met my partners, Carey and Jenny, and started Gifts in 2005 to provide speech, language, & reading therapy to children at the Gifts office and in private schools.  I incorporate my enthusiasm and love for children into therapy, which results in a positive and fun learning environment.

In my eight years of experience, I have worked with children to improve their speech, language, and reading skills in many different settings.  I began my career as a speech-language pathologist in Ocala working in the public school system.  I then moved to Birmingham, Alabama where I worked for a private pediatric therapy practice.  After getting married, I moved back to Ocala and worked at MRMC Speech and Hearing Center in the Communi-Kids program.

It was during my time at MRMC that I met my partners, and we started Gifts in 2005 to provide speech, language, & reading therapy to children.  It has and continues to be a rewarding experience helping children in my hometown.

Denise Pegg

I have been a speech language pathologist for quite a few years. I earned my bachelors’ degree from Florida State University (1973) and years later my Masters’ degree (2000) from East Tennessee State University where I was also inducted into two honor societies: Phi Kappa Phi and Gamma Beta Phi. My husband was an officer in the Air Force so we moved around quite a bit. I was fortunate enough to be able to work in my chosen field in many different states as well as for the Department of Defense overseas in the United Kingdom.

I work in the public school system full time and devote after hours at Gifts. At the present, I am working toward becoming certified in working with students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Understanding the incredible and intricate intelligences these wonderful students possess is an ongoing process. Discovering their magnificence, while working with their delays, are the constant challenges.
